Malcolm W Mintz received his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Hawaii where he minored in Southeast Asian Studies. He spent three years lecturing in Linguistics at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang where he began his study of Malay. He was employed subsequently by Murdoch University in Perth to develop and coordinate a programme of Malay and Indonesian language. This programme has been successful in offering students the opportunity to develop competencies in either Malay or Indonesian, or to combine their study - developing a dominant competency in one version of the language, while obtaining a general familiarity with the other. Dr Mintz has also taught in the United States, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. He carries out research on Philippine languages as well as Malay and Indonesian and has published a number of books and articles related to these areas. Currently Dr. Mintz is an Honorary Research Fellow with the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Western Australia in Perth.
