LISTENING COMPREHENSION:
SELECTIONS FROM MALAYSIAN AND INDONESIAN HISTORY

Listening Comprehension comprises 24 recorded history selections. Twelve selections relate to the early colonial history of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, and 12 to the early colonial history of Indonesia. Each set of 12 selections forms a separate section of the text.

Included in the section on Malaysian history are selections such as Malacca as a Trading Centre, Flowers of Gold, Francis Light and Penang, Stamford Raffles and Singapore, The Straits Settlements, The Federated and Non-Federated Malay States, Sarawak and the Arrival of James Brooke, Sabah and the British North Borneo Chartered Company, Yap Ah Loy and the Situation in Selangor, and The Rule of Sultan Abu Bakar in Johor.

The section on Indonesian history includes selections such as The Portuguese in the Moluccas, The Dutch and the VOC, The Dissolving of the VOC, The Dutch in the Moluccas and Sulawesi, Opposition to Dutch Colonisation, British Rule in Indonesia, The Diponegoro War, The Culture System, Liberalism, The Clerical Wars and The Acehnese Wars.

Selections include a list of new vocabulary items and a set of ten questions to help improve a student's comprehension of formal Malay and Indonesian and introduce writing in a guided and structured way.

Comprehension questions are of various types: those in which the answer is direct and can be obtained from the text, those in which the answer is implied, and those in which the answer calls for an opinion based on the context of the selection.

The introduction to the text contains advice on how to work with listening comprehension materials, and the first lesson includes a sample format for writing answers to the comprehension questions. Click here if you would like to sample a lesson.

The 24 selections in the text are recorded on 4 cassettes. The same information is recorded on 4 CDs. The text comes with both cassettes and CDs.
