READINGS IN INDONESIAN CULTURE

Readings in Indonesian Culture comprises 12 reading selections. The selections cover different geographical areas of Indonesia and discuss various ethnic groups. These include the Acehnese, Bataks and Minangkabau of Sumatra, the various Dayak groups of Central Kalimantan, the Minahasa and Bugis-Makassar peoples of Sulawesi, the Ambonese of the Moluccas, the North Coast peoples of Irian Jaya, the Sundanese and Javanese of Java, the Chinese and the Balinese.

Each ethnic group is discussed from a different cultural perspective. Students are introduced to the cultural and ethnic diversity of Indonesia, as well as presented with the vocabulary and structures needed to recognise and discuss such diversity. These cultural perspectives include: earning a livelihood, languages and dialects, written scripts and literature, religion, the family and marriage customs, types of villages and houses, social structure and social stratification.

The reading selections are accompanied by a list of new vocabulary items. A full glossary of all vocabulary items is included at the end of the text. Each selection also has a set of ten exercises which include grammar, comprehension, and general discussion. The grammar exercises deal with affixation and sentence structure.

The comprehension exercises include questions about synonyms, definitions, sentence completion, sentence sequencing, gap filling, paraphrasing and classification.

In the discussion section students first talk about the reading selection, and then relate this to their own culture and society. Working with a reading text by completing a series of exercises reduces the need for memorisation and leads to genuine learning and long-time retention of the material read.

New to this edition is a series of sketches to better exemplify the selections presented in the text.

The reading selections are recorded on two audio CD's which accompany the book. Click here if your would like to sample a lesson and here to see the table of contents and introduction. .
